Don't Make Mistakes Again, This is the Right Amount of Sunscreen!

Hello, Implovers! Are you still regularly using sunscreen every day, respect. That means you still care & love yourself.

By the way, have you ever thought whether the amount is correct?

This is often overlooked. Many have chosen good sunscreen, but the protection remains suboptimal because the amount used is too little. However, the effectiveness of sunscreen, both SPF and PA, depends greatly on how much product you apply to your skin.

Let's thoroughly discuss the correct amount and way to use sunscreen!

Why is the Amount of Sunscreen Important?

Sunlight produces two types of radiation that directly impact the skin: UVA, which triggers premature aging and hyperpigmentation, and UVB, which causes sunburn. In the long run, both are also associated with the risk of skin cancer.

The SPF and PA numbers on sunscreen packaging, including claims of brightening or protective benefits, are calculated based on specific application standards. If the amount you use is less than that standard, the protection automatically decreases, even if the product is considered one of the best sunscreens.

Experts recommend a minimum of 2 mg per cm² of skin for truly optimal protection, Implovers. It may sound technical, but don't worry, there's an easy way to measure it at home!

What is the Correct Amount of Sunscreen?

The most popular and easy-to-remember method is the two-finger technique, for the face & neck. It's very simple, just apply sunscreen in a straight line along your index finger, from the base to the tip, and do the same along your middle finger

Those two lines are the recommended amount to cover the face, neck, and back of the ears evenly. Make sure all areas are covered and no area is missed.

However, if you're only focusing on the face area, about ¼ teaspoon is enough, roughly the size of a two hundred rupiah coin or a small almond. The key is to evenly cover all facial surfaces.

And for more comprehensive body protection such as arms, legs, and torso, you'll need about 30 ml or two teaspoons of sunscreen. This amount is sufficient to adequately cover all exposed skin areas.

When and How to Properly Apply Sunscreen?

Besides the amount & timing, the application technique also determines how effectively sunscreen works on your skin, Implovers.

  • Application timing means applying sunscreen 15–30 minutes before going out or being exposed to the sun. This interval is important so the product can absorb properly and form a stable protective layer before direct contact with UV rays.

  • Application technique by gently spreading sunscreen evenly over all exposed areas and avoid rubbing too hard as it can make the product uneven and reduce its effectiveness.

  • Commonly missed areas such as the back of the hands, tip of the nose, ears, and back of the neck. These areas are often exposed and prone to sunburn.

Don't Forget to Reapply!

One more thing, Implovers, that is equally important as the amount is the need to reapply sunscreen. Continuous sun exposure, sweat, and gradual friction will reduce the protective layer formed. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when engaging in outdoor activities. If you sweat a lot or after swimming, reapplication needs to be done more frequently.

Choose Sunscreen that is Comfortable to Reapply

One reason people are reluctant to reapply is because the sunscreen they use feels heavy, sticky, or leaves a white cast after several layers, right?! Therefore, it's important to choose a sunscreen for oily or normal skin with a light and comfortable texture to wear all day long. When it comes to the comfort of reapplication, the texture of sunscreen becomes a factor that cannot be ignored. Sunscreens that are too heavy or sticky usually make people reluctant to reapply, even though that's the key to protection.

If you're still looking for the right one, choose a sunscreen with a gel or watery texture that is light and quickly absorbed. For light daily activities, SPF 30 is sufficient. But if you spend a lot of time outdoors, SPF 40 or even SPF 50 PA++++ can be a safer choice, especially if the formula is also enriched with active ingredients like Niacinamide or Centella Asiatica that help maintain moisture and soothe the skin.

Implora itself has a line Perfect Shield that comes in three variants of SPF 30, 40, and 50 with a lightweight texture designed to be comfortable for reapplication without feeling heavy on the skin.

So, now you know, Implovers? Using good sunscreen is important, but the amount is also crucial. Two fingers for face and neck, ¼ teaspoon for face only, and don't forget to reapply every two hours. With the right amount and suitable products, your skin protection from the sun can be truly optimal, not just a morning skincare formality!
